Abstract: Asanewresearchtrendofcognitivelinguisitcs,multimodalmetaphormanifestitselfnotjustinlanguage,butalsoviaothermodesofcommunication,suchaspictures,music,sounds,andgestures.UsingthecovercartoonsofTheEconomistasexamples,thispaperexplorestheconstructionofmultimodalmetaphorfromcognitiveapproach.Itattemptstoillustratethatallthemodalslikeimage,text,layout,andevencolorinteractwitheachotherandtogethertheyproduceadiscourse,furtherrevealingverbopictorialrelationshipandtheconstructionofmetaphorineconomicdiscourses.
