Abstract: Urbanizationisaninevitableproductofeconomicdevelopmentinourcountry,whileurban sprawlisanimportantindicatorofurbanizationprocess.ThecharacteristicsofRemotesensingtechnologyisfast,convenient,largeareasynchronizedobservationwhichhasbeenwidelyusedinthemonitoringofurbansprawl.Thispaper,firstly,takingHengyangcityasthestudyobject,choosingLandsatTMremotesensingimageoftheregionin1989,2006and2010asdatasources,utilizesvegetation,waterandbuiling,characteristicindexesandsupervisedclassificationmethodtoextractthreeyears′cityboundaryinformationofHengyang.Secondly,usingGISspatialanalysistechnology,discussesthespacecharacteristicsofurbansprawlinHengyangcityfromtwoaspectswhicharetheextensionstrengthandtheextension direction.
